Dear fellow game developers
It is our honor to host the fist Vietnam Game Developer Conference and I would like to welcome all of you.
Like many of you, my first experience of gaming was in early 1990 with Mario, Contra, Double Dragons on the NES, and later Prince of Persia, Budokan and Warcraft on the PC. Ever since, I was hooked and game becomes a major part of my life. It is this passion for game that leads to the establishment of VNG in late 2004, and it is this passion for game that we organize this developer conference. VNG wants all the people who love games not only could play, but also could talk, share and make great games.
VNG started our first 2 games studios in 2006, with Game Studio South making the first Vietnamese MMORPG (Thuan Thien Kiem) and Game Studio North making online casual games through Zing Play. Since then, we have grown our game studios to nearly 250 people in 4 studios with many casual, social and mobile games. It is this 6-year journey of making game that makes us realize that game development is very hard. While obtaining the skills of technical, graphic design and game design then putting together a functioning game product is already a major feast of achievement, actually having commercial successful games attracting hundred of thousands users then publishing our games to international market is unimaginable just 2 years ago. Especially, there is virtually no formal education or training programs in Vietnam for game development, and all of the passionate people who wants to make games have to learn by themselves from scratch.
To help our people, VNG has organized many internal seminars and training to our studio members in game development skills and experiences sharing. We have done that for a while, and this year, we would like to share what we have learnt with all of you, the people who is passionate about game development. Moreover, we would like to have some of the external people who also have skills and experiences to share with the game community. We want to share what we have learnt, and at the same time, learnt from you.
Why VNG does that?
At the heart of any true gamer is the spirit of sharing and competing. We never enjoy a game only played by ourselves, and we never enjoy competing with “newbies”. We want to makes game with, and competing with the best and most talented game developers because that is how we would get better. We also believe that game development is a very exciting and fast-growth industry for the young generation of Vietnam to participate and prove ourselves. We want Vietnam to be known in the gaming world as one of a few capable game developes, along side of the US, Japan, Korea and China.
This is the first Vietnam Game Developer Conference and we strongly believe that the next ones will get bigger and better. The journey ahead will be long and difficult no doubt, but it would be a journey worth going.
